District Report

Dear Friends,

I'm thrilled to tell you about our successful results for the people of Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro and all of California. All of my bills that reached the governor's desk this year were signed into law. We protected patients from surprise medical bills. We helped create more affordable housing. We strengthened our gun laws to ensure firearms don't end up in the wrong hands. We took on Big Tobacco and made California healthier. We recommitted to saving our planet and protecting the environment. We fought to protect survivors of human trafficking. We won the fight for $15/hour minimum wage, and we secured $530 million for more preschool access and more money to allow more California students to go to CSU and UC schools. Read on!

Happy New Year

Dear Friend:

Thank you for allowing me to represent you in the State Capitol this year. The past year serving as the State Assemblymember for the 18th District has been one of the most meaningful and exciting years of my life. I had the opportunity to advance my longstanding commitments to support our public schools, keep our streets safe for our children, and create sustainable opportunities for economic and job growth - which together will mean more prosperous communities for everyone.

Overall, 2013 was a tremendously productive year for the state and for the 18th Assembly District, in particular. After years of devastating cuts to state services, this year's budget in general was on-time and balanced. My colleagues and I advocated for a budget to reflect our state's and my own priorities to include continued fiscal responsibility, strengthen the Middle Class, and deliver effective, efficient services for all areas throughout California, including Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro.

Women LeadershipDear Friend,

Children play an important role in our military communities and they deserve our support. As such, please join me in celebrating Military Child Month this month to honor military families and thank them for their sacrifices.

Military families move between assignments on a regular basis. While reassignments can be beneficial to a military career, they are often difficult for the children of military families. The average military student faces transition challenges more than twice during high school, and many military children will attend six to nine different school systems from kindergarten through high school. Fortunately, there are a number of California programs committed to assisting military families with transition challenges.

Please join me in supporting military personnel and their loved ones. Visit my website to learn more and to nominate a veteran for recognition.

Sincerely,
Rob Bonta

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 - 00:00

On April 22, people around the world will celebrate the 44th anniversary of Earth Day by giving back to their communities. Even though California leads the nation in environmental conservation, there is much more we can and must do to preserve the environment for future generations.

As part of my ongoing effort to protect the environment, my office will join hundreds of volunteers throughout the district on Earth Day to clean and beautify our communities.

For more information, please feel free to call my district office at (510) 286-1670.

Studies have shown reading to children fosters success in school and life.

To raise awareness about the importance of reading and to encourage children to read every day, the National Education Association started the Read Across America Campaign in 1998. Additionally, in 2011, the State Legislature passed resolution ACR 62, which recognizes March as Read Across America Month in California.

In celebration of Read Across America Month, Assemblymember Bonta (D-Oakland) encourages all Californians to take time to sit down and read during the month of March. The theme of this year's celebration is "Reading Takes You Places."

Assemblymember Bonta looks forward to working on the issue of literacy and how to improve literacy rates during his time in the Legislature.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DISTRICT

Friday, February 22, 2013 - 00:00

Cash for CollegePreparing for college is a start on the road to creating a better future. Unfortunately, the cost of college can be a great hardship, forcing students to put their dreams on hold, sometimes permanently. To help students and parents find ways to pay for college, the Cash for College Coalition will host workshops throughout February to help high school seniors apply for a Cal Grant. At these workshops, students and parents can talk with advisors about financial aid opportunities and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA is used to apply for financial aid from the State of California and the federal government, as well as direct assistance from colleges.

Filling out this form is the first step to secure assistance through programs like the federal Pell Grant and state Cal Grant. Qualifying students who complete and submit their FAFSA by March 2nd of this year may be eligible to receive grant awards exceeding $12,000.
