Assemblymember Bonta Co-Authors Bill to Curb Gun Violence
(OAKLAND, CA) – Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) was proud to participate in today’s press conference to unveil Assemblymember Nancy Skinner’s AB 48, for which he serves as a co-author. AB 48 seeks to curb gun violence by regulating and tightening ammunition sales in California and preventing the use of high-capacity magazines. Assemblymember Bonta made the following statement:
“I am proud to co-author Assembly Bill 48 and take a strong stand against gun violence in our community and in our state. While the tragic shootings that have occurred in the past few weeks are shining an important spotlight on the issue, Oakland is no stranger to gun violence. It’s been an ongoing and devastating reality in our community for decades.
“On December 30, 2011, a five year old boy was shot and killed in front of his parents’ food truck in Oakland. He attended kindergarten at the same elementary school as my daughter. He was Oakland’s 110th victim of homicide in 2011.
“One year later and only one mile away, on December 30, 2012, a fifteen year old girl was gunned down on her way to BART. She was Oakland’s 131st victim of homicide in 2012. Twelve of those victims were 18 or younger.
“This rampant violence has to end. AB 48 is the right step toward limiting large purchases of ammunition and the use of large capacity magazines whose only purpose is to kill. It’s simply unacceptable that a person can buy thousands of rounds of ammunition over a short period of time without being detected by law enforcement.”
Assemblymember Bonta concluded, “I look forward to working with Assemblymember Skinner to make our communities safer from gun violence by getting AB 48 passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor.”
AB 48 would do all of the following:
- Regulate all ammunition sales
- Require ammunition purchasers to show identification
- Require ammunition sellers to be licensed
- Require ammunition sellers to report sales to the Department of Justice
- Require the Department of Justice to notify law enforcement of large quantity ammunition purchases
- Ban kits to convert ammunition clips into high-capacity magazines
Elected in 2012, Assemblymember Rob Bonta represents the 18th Assembly District, which includes Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro. Bonta is the Chair of the Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security Committee. He serves on the following Assembly Committees: Health, Transportation, Banking and Finance, and Elections and Redistricting.
