Brown Signs Bonta Bill Protecting California’s Schools

Tuesday, September 29, 2015

(Sacramento, CA) – Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) announced that Governor Brown signed his AB 625 this week, a bill to protect California’s schools that have been taken over by the state.

“AB 625 protects our schools from further harm during the state takeover process through improving coordination and communication during state audits; it is important that the remedy designed to help districts actually improves their financial stability rather than punishes them, and their students, for the mistakes of the past,” said Bonta.

Building off the experience of Oakland Unified School District, which is among the nine districts that have been issued emergency loans, this increased communication and coordination between the California Department of Education, the State Controller’s Office, and the audited school district, will improve the timeliness of the audit process, reduce the financial burden on the district, and ensure the audits can be used in a constructive manner.

AB 625 was sponsored by Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, and supported by the Oakland Unified School District and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
