I introduced the California Green New Deal this month to combat the existential threat of climate change while uplifting equity and protecting working people every step of the way!
This is an aggressive, transformative bill. And it must be! The danger of the climate crisis is limitless, and so our response must be proportionate in scale, speed and scope.
While California has long been a global leader and taken bold steps to combat the climate crisis and protect our people, we must do more — and do it now! We cannot wait — and the clock is ticking. Science, evidence, and data all tell us that we have about 10 years to drastically cut our carbon emissions before it is too late to reverse course and we suffer catastrophic unraveling.
I’m working closely with a broad coalition of environmental, equity, and labor leaders in support of the CA Green New Deal. And I’m specifically working with labor unions to identify and include measures that will ensure a just transition for our California workers who currently have good jobs with prevailing wages and strong health and welfare benefits, so we can ensure they are kept whole and not harmed as we move to a clean energy, green society. I’ve always thought of the CA Green New Deal as a Blue and Green New Deal that must address the needs of our working women and men while protecting the environment and saving the planet.
Some of the specific details of the #CAGreenNewDeal are being shaped at this moment in consultation with our diverse coalition. This group is evaluating bold ideas such as:
- Accelerating reductions of air pollution to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.
- Doubling affordable housing and public transportation capacity by 2030.
- Significantly reducing disparate standard of living indices for historically impacted communities of color by 2030.
Our coalition needs your support to get the #CAGreenNewDeal passed and signed into law.

Together, let’s lead the way and show others around the U.S. and the world that we can promote policies that protect our children, our workers, and our planet while maintaining and strengthening our powerful, progressive, and equitable economy!
