Speaker Appoints Bonta to Chair Extraordinary Session Committee on Health Care
Bonta to serve as Chair of the Public Health and Developmental Services Committee
(Sacramento, CA) - Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) issued the following statement after being appointed by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) to Chair the Public Health and Developmental Services Committee. The committee was established in response to Governor Jerry Brown's proclamation to convene an Extraordinary Session of the Legislature on health care to secure additional funding for Medi-Cal and developmental disability services.
“This week Governor Brown signed a balanced and fiscally responsible budget that provides $115.4 billion to invest in California’s most valuable asset: our people.
“While the budget signed this week is arguably one of the strongest California has enacted in a decade, there are still some significant missing pieces. Governor Brown has appropriately called an Extraordinary Session of the Legislature in order to hammer out these issues, asking that the Legislature provide $1.1 billion in permanent and sustainable funding to stabilize state funding for Medi-Cal, restore the 7 percent of In-Home Supportive Services hours to provide our hard working home care workers with the dignity, respect, and fair pay they deserve, and strengthen funding for providers of Medi-Cal and developmental disability services. I am honored that Speaker Atkins has appointed me to Chair the Public Health and Developmental Services Committee charged with these important responsibilities.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues to improve funding and access to services and care for Californians most in need, and am honored and grateful to work with them on this critical aspect of our state’s budget and the health care of all Californians,” Bonta concluded.
Assemblymember Bonta represents the 18th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro. Bonta Chairs the Assembly Health Committee; the Public Employees, Retirement, and Social Security Committee; and the Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color. He is also a member of the following committees: Appropriations, Budget, Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health and Human Services, Joint Legislative Budget, and Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management.
