Bonta Statement on Gov. Brown Budget Plan

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) issued the following statement in response to Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed Budget for 2018-19:

“Governor Brown’s 2018-2019 budget proposal is what we have come to expect from his steady hand: A balanced spending plan that keeps our state on safe and secure ground while wisely investing in our future.

“I’m pleased to see additional commitments for education including fully funding the Local Control Funding Formula that I strongly supported to help our students thrive. Free tuition for first year community college students brings us one important step closer to my vision of universal tuition-free public higher education in California. At the same time, I would like to see additional funding for early childhood education so we can get our children off to an early start in life. As the normal budget process moves forward, I will also be advocating for additional funding to continue our progress toward greater housing affordability. In addition, I will call for dedicated funding for our courts to reform our money bail system and to expunge outdated cannabis convictions which will help thousands of Californians make a fresh start.

“While not perfect, this budget plan represents a strong framework that shows the nation and the world what is possible when people-centered values, not partisan vitriol, guide our policies.”

Assemblymember Rob Bonta represents the 18th Assembly District, which includes Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro and is the Assistant Majority Leader and Chair of the Asian Pacific Islander (API) Legislative Caucus.
