Statement on Death of Nia Wilson:

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Assemblymember Rob Bonta issued the following statement on the murder of Nia Wilson at an Oakland BART station on Sunday, July 22, 2018:

My heart grieves over the brutal and vicious murder of Nia Wilson and the attack on her sister at the MacArthur BART station.  I am thankful that the suspect has been apprehended.

As we learn more about the motivation for this horrific crime, our community is standing together against this reprehensible act, and in honor of a young woman's life ended far too soon.  Emotions are running deep and raw, and while words are insufficient in moments like these, it's clear from the vigil and march that we will seek each other out in our shared humanity and be a source of strength and healing for one another.

This senseless violence has no place in Oakland or anywhere else. No parent should ever have to worry that their child won’t come home from an evening out, a day at school, or a shift at work.  There is also no place in Oakland, or anywhere else, for racially-motivated violence and hatred.  My family mourns with the Wilson family at this tragic time and shares our community’s desire for justice.
