Assemblyman Bonta's Statement on Oakland Mayor and Congressman Ron Dellums
Assemblymember Rob Bonta issued the following statement regarding the passing of former Oakland Mayor and Congressman Ron Dellums:
Ron Dellums stood for justice and represented Oakland and the East Bay for decades with tenacity, passion, and courage that are legendary.
I extend my sincere condolences to his family.
From his childhood in Oakland, Ron Dellums rose to become the first African American from Northern California elected to Congress. He fought unapologetically and advanced social justice for the poor, the vulnerable, and the disenfranchised.
In one of the many hallmarks of his distinguished career, Dellums famously led a bipartisan effort in Congress to successfully override a veto by President Ronald Reagan in protest of South African apartheid.
On a personal level, I will always cherish his support and guidance. He was generous with his time and his thoughts. I am thankful for and will not forget his mentorship, his insight, and his constant encouragement to me to aggressively push for what is right and just.
He was one of a kind. The true spirit of what makes Oakland great.
Thank you, Congressman, for your invaluable service and for the powerful legacy of political activism you fostered that continues to live on.
