AB 1191 to Create Pathway for Privately-Financed, New Oakland A’s Ballpark Next to Jack London Square Signed into Law
SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) issued the following statement upon Governor Gavin Newsom signing AB 1191 into law:
“AB 1191 is about much more than baseball,” said Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland). “This project as designed by the Oakland A’s represents an economic and environmental revitalization for west Oakland. The new privately-financed ballpark near Jack London Square at Howard Terminal will create strong union jobs that provide good wages and benefits. The overall project will also create badly-needed housing, especially affordable housing for our residents. The A’s have expressed a strong commitment to remain rooted in Oakland and invest in our community for years to come. AB 1191 will help allow this project and all of its benefits to be realized.”
Oakland A’s President Dave Kaval issued the following statement:
“Governor Newsom's signing of AB 1191 represents a major step forward for our efforts to build a new ballpark district that will make our city and our club proud for generations to come. The new ballpark at Howard Terminal will be a model of green design, sustainable development, and environmental justice reform. We still have important work left ahead of us, but make no mistake: today's news is a big milestone in this process. We are grateful to Assemblymember Bonta for his leadership and appreciate the overwhelming support from the Legislature and Governor."
About AB 1191: AB 1191 creates a pathway for the construction of a new privately-financed, environmentally superior ballpark at Howard Terminal next to Oakland’s Jack London Square. Specifically, this bill provides authorization to the State Lands Commission to settle title and boundary uncertainties and approve a trust exchange that will confirm the public trust on portions of the site, as well as obtain approval from the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission after certain conditions have been satisfied for permit approval.
Assemblymember Rob Bonta represents the 18th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro and is the Assistant Majority Leader.
