Bonta statement on the California Democratic Party adopting Money Bail resolution

Monday, May 22, 2017

Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D- Oakland) issued the following statement on the California Democratic Party adopting Resolution 16-06.35L on Money Bail:

"I am excited and thankful that the  California Democratic Party has included Bail Reform as a key component of its 2017 platform!  Much like Universal Healthcare, Environmental Protection, Strong Public Education for All, and Housing Affordability, Bail Reform is a core value of the Democratic Party and of California, and is critical in our journey to create a more just and equitable California.  The current money bail system is unjust, unfair, inhumane and fundamentally broken.  It punishes poor people for being poor.  It determines liberty based on the size of one's wallet instead of the size of one's risk.  By favoring wealth and punishing poverty, it creates unequal justice.  We can change all this and create a fairer, more just, more safe and more fiscally-responsible system.  The time is now to pass AB 42 (Bonta) and SB 10 (Hertzberg)!"
