Please join me in urging Governor Newsom to issue an executive order ending the voluntary transfer of Californians from our jails and prisons directly into ICE custody during the current State of Emergency.
When Californians have paid their debt to society and earned their release, they should be able to return back to their communities and to their families. They shouldn't be funneled into Trump's immigration detention and deportation machine. Immigrant Californians should be treated no differently than all other Californians in this regard.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Californians incarcerated in these for-profit, private immigration detention centers face a heightened risk of contracting the virus and spreading it to other detainees as well as to staff. Data shows that 1 in 4 people held in ICE detention have tested positive for COVID-19. They risk death and severe health consequences.
We must stop ICE transfers to protect the health, safety and welfare of all Californians.
Joining me in this request are 45 of my colleagues in the California State Assembly and Senate who have signed on to a letter calling for this life-saving action.

As California struggles with a rapidly-spreading and deadly outbreak of COVID-19 within state prisons and many county jails, the virus is also spreading unchecked in for-profit, private ICE detention facilities in California.
Add your name to call on Governor Newsom to partner with us and suspend the voluntary and wholly unnecessary transfer of Californians from state prisons and county jails into ICE custody!
