Governor, Chief Justice Commit to Work with Bonta on Bail Reform

Friday, August 25, 2017

(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) is working with Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., State Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Senator Bob Hertzberg on reforms to California's bail system that prioritize public safety and cost-efficiency. “For too long because of our fundamentally broken money bail system untold numbers of Californians have been denied justice,” says Assemblymember Bonta. “Poor people have been punished simply for being poor while the wealthy are able to buy their freedom regardless of the risk to the public.” Discussions regarding the current legislation - SB 10, the California Money Bail Reform Act of 2017, authored by Senator Hertzberg and Assemblymember Bonta - will continue throughout the fall and the bill will be revisited early next year.
