Dear Friends,
I am pleased to share that, as of September 2024, California residents can now securely add their Department of Motor Vehicles driver’s license or identification to Apple Wallet, building upon the Governor’s announcement that residents could add their identification in Google Wallet. This effort is an extension of California’s ongoing mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program designed to use new technology to provide residents with a convenient way to store their license in the digital age – limited to the first 1.5 million residents!

As an additional DMV announcement, the State of California is now making it easier for senior drivers to renew their licenses with the hope of reducing time spent at the DMV. Eligible drivers include those over 70 years old with licenses that expire in 2024 or later; the written knowledge test will no longer be required for renewal. However, drivers will still be required to visit the DMV to undergo a vision exam and take an updated photo. Please visit the California DMV website for additional information and exceptions to the new policy. If you have concerns about the safety of drivers, please call the DMV hotline at (800) 777-0133.

Section 1: California Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) Pilot Program
California residents can now add their Driver’s License or state ID to Apple or Google Wallet. Please note a mobile driver’s license does not replace the requirement for an individual to carry a physical license behind the wheel.
Add your California driver’s license or state ID in Apple Wallet
- Open the Wallet app and tap the “+” button at the top of the screen.
- Select “Driver’s License or State ID” and follow the steps to begin the verification process.
- For security purposes, a user’s information is encrypted so others – including Apple – cannot access it unless a user chooses to present it.
- Have your physical ID present for the verification process.
Apple does not retain any presentment information that can be tied back to a user, and neither Apple nor the DMV know when or to whom you present your driver’s license or state ID.
Add your California driver’s license or state ID in Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet or Download Google Wallet
- Tap “Add to Wallet”
- Select “ID Card” then “California”
- Follow the verification Steps with your physical ID.
Google Wallet keeps your driver’s license and state ID safe with advanced security built right into your Android phone. When you add your ID to Wallet, the information is stored and encrypted to stay secure.
Section 2: New Driver’s License Requirements for Senior Citizens
Eligible senior drivers, ages 70 and up, can now renew their licenses without taking the written knowledge exam. For more information, please visit the California DMV website or call the DMV hotline at (800) 777-0133 with any questions or safety concerns. Eligibility for this elimination includes drivers aged 70 or older whose California driver’s license expires on or after October 1, 2024.
Drivers 70 and older are still required to take a vision exam and an updated photo.
Contact the California Department of Motor Vehicles here or call (800) 777-0133.
Section 3: EBMUD Unpaid Water Bill Payment Plan Information
Did you know the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) can work to develop a customized payment plan for unpaid water bills? EBMUD is urging customers with unpaid water bills to call as soon as possible. If water bills remain unpaid, EBMUD has the right to place a lien on the homeowner's property or decrease the flow of water.
If you or a loved one has an outstanding payment, please contact EBMUD today at (866) 403-2683 or online.
