April Updates: AD-18 Schools Awarded, Asm. Bonta Uplifts Transgender Awareness Week, Bonta Bills Advance, and more!

Asm. Bonta April Updates Graphic

At the beginning of the month, Republican members of the Assembly attempted to advance harmful legislation to target the LGBTQ+ community, stoking fear, hate, and division to promote their anti-trans rhetoric. While I do not sit on the committee in which these bills were heard, I was proud of my colleagues for standing up for our trans youth and preventing these bills from advancing. I took to the Assembly floor to recognize Trans Week of Visibility because I will always support our LGBTQ+ community. Our state must remain unwavering in its support for our historically marginalized communities.

Our team has had our nose to the grindstone at the Capitol to ensure our district's bold legislative gets across the finish line to deliver results for our community. I'm proud to share that several of our bills have advanced through policy committees and are one step closer to being signed into law. They include:

  • AB 40 to protect abortion care in emergency settings passed the Assembly Health Committee.
  • AB 50 to make over-the-counter birth control more accessible to Medi-Cal recipients passed the Assembly Business & Professions Committee.
  • AB 489 to prohibit AI from misrepresenting itself as a licensed medical professional, passed the Assembly Business & Professions Committee.
  • AB 938, to provide legal relief to survivors of human trafficking and intimate partner violence, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

This isn't possible without the support of advocates and everyday Californians. I invite you to continue submitting position letters to the legislature's committees as bills move through California's legislative process.

I’m proud to have such exceptional schools in our district. Education was crucial to my life journey, and our East Bay kids deserve the best education opportunities. I want to congratulate the five schools in our district that were recognized as 2025 California Distinguished Schools and applaud the years of hard work from our teachers, school district workers, and school board members that made this possible. The following schools have been recognized for their demonstrated exceptional school programming, success in closing the student achievement gap, and exceptional student performance:

Oakland Unified
Lincoln Elementary
Crocker Highlands Elementary
Peralta Elementary

Alameda Unified
Bay Farm Elementary
Love Elementary

From SoCal to NorCal, from the Bay to LA, I know Assembly Democrats are deeply committed to addressing the everyday expenses that our constituents face. Meanwhile, in DC, the President is fixated on tariffs, causing the country to fall into a trade war, Americans' 401ks to plunge, and costs for consumers to spike. California is the world's fifth-largest economy and leads the nation in agriculture and manufacturing - we must leverage our strength to combat these tariffs, which could represent the largest tax increase in American history. Every dollar counts for our communities, and we must continue passing smart legislation for peace of mind in Californians' pocketbooks.

As Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, I know that our lifelong health story is written daily, especially when it comes to our oral health. I had the pleasure to meet with Delta Dental and learn more about not only the jobs they bring to Oakland but also the importance of their senior oral health programs. We know good dental health starts at a young age, and it's why I'm proud to be authoring AB 350, which will expand the opportunities for youth to access fluoride varnish, setting them up for a lifetime of good dental hygiene. From legislation to community collaboration, I am committed to improving Californians' health outcomes.
