Dear Friends,
Our community’s strength and resilience are directly tied to the conditions of our workplaces. As we celebrate Labor Day, let’s reflect on the vital importance of workers’ rights and upholding the freedom to organize and voice concerns. In 2023, I was proud to stand with teachers, artists, and workers in what became known as ‘Hot Labor Summer’ – a powerful statewide movement focused on negotiating meaningful wages and benefits in response to inflation and the rising cost of living.
As Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, our first hearing of the year focused on addressing our state’s critical shortage of healthcare workers. We prioritized bolstering California’s pipeline of diverse medical professionals to ensure that every community – no matter where they live or who they are – has access to comprehensive medical services. I look forward to continuing to support state policies and agencies working to uphold the rights of working families.
I applaud the California Department of Industrial Relations and the Labor Commissioner’s Office for protecting employees across the state. Earlier this year, California awarded $335,935 to the Alameda County District Attorney as part of the $8.55 million Workers’ Rights Enforcement Grant Program. This grant supports our public prosecutors in addressing wage theft, exploitative labor industry trends, and barriers workers confront in reporting violations.
In today’s E-Alert: Honoring Workers’ Rights, Protections, and Resources on Labor Day, you’ll find information on how to protect your rights in the workplace and report unfair labor practices. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my District Office if you have any questions or need support connecting with a state agency or department.
Yours in Service,
Mia Bonta
