March Recap: East Bay Values, Public Service, Oakland Sports & Ports, and More!

From attacks on the Department of Education, our LGBTQ+ siblings, and our immigrant neighbors, it’s clear the moment we find ourselves in is tumultuous and stressful for large swaths of our community. It’s also clear that this moment will require bold leadership and community action. From the Chicano movement of the 1970s that helped establish community health clinics to the Black Panthers’ Free Breakfast Program, our communities have always shown resilience and the ability to turn pain into power. I am ready to fight alongside you to demand California continue its progressive leadership and stand up for ALL our residents.

Yours in Service,

I’m proud of my record in the Assembly, voting for East Bay values and supporting our community’s working families. Oakland, Alameda, and Emeryville voters clearly want policies that will protect our environment, increase housing opportunities, keep our communities safe, and put more money in our pockets. People are taking notice of our office, our bold legislation, and our progressive people-centered voting record. I’m proud to have been recognized as a Pro-Kid Champion by Children Now alongside other recent recognitions from ACLU CalAction, the California Association of Black Lawyers, our local labor unions, health policy advocates, and more. Thank you for contacting my office to uplift your priorities – your voice shapes my votes and legislation. You can reach my office below.

I’m always blown away by the work being done in our district. I was lucky enough to recently tour Planting Justice in East Oakland and learn how they turn plants into power through their supportive programs for youth and the formerly incarcerated. Not only does their work build community and empower individuals, but Planting Justice is tackling food deserts and expanding access to fresh produce for Oaklanders. I was also able to meet with up-and-coming East Bay leaders at Leadership Alameda and learn more about their dedication to benefitting our local economies. These organizations inspire the work I do in Sacramento as AD-18 continues to show the strength of community.

Oaklanders are loyal and avid sports fans. This was on full display at the Roots game opener. On Saturday, March 22, the Oakland Roots kicked off their inaugural season at the historic Oakland Coliseum to a crowd of 26,575 Bay sports fans excited for the return of professional sports to East Oakland. Then, on Sunday, a record-breaking 10,000 runners took to the town's streets with the Oakland Marathon. Proceeds from the race supported OUSD students' access to books, new playgrounds, and sports opportunities through Steph and Ayesha Curry's Eat. Learn. Play. It's clear that when you invest in Oakland, the town will show up and that Oakland will continue to be a beating heart of the sports world.

Processing upwards of 2 million containers each year and supporting over $170 billion in annual economic activity, the Port of Oakland is an economic powerhouse in Northern California, and federally proposed tariffs put that at risk. Team Bonta recently toured the Port to learn more about the impacts expected and how that will affect our local community. Proposed tariffs and levies would affect the majority of imports to the East Bay port, increasing prices around $1,200 a year for California families, and potentially deterring shipping companies from stopping in our Port at all. The Port of Oakland is a leader in green shipping and our communities rely on its success; the federal government must implement smart trade policies that support our Port and don’t raise costs on hard-working families.
