May with Mia: Fighting for our Values, Celebrating our Community, and Remembering Those We’ve Lost.

Earlier this month, the Governor unveiled his updated budget proposal for this upcoming fiscal year. Disappointingly, this proposal contains many cuts that would directly impact our community members, and I have spent recent days ringing the alarm bell about what this would mean for everyday Californians.

Our budget speaks our values. The California I believe in stands for healthcare for all. The California I believe in funds reproductive healthcare. The California I believe in supports our immigrant neighbors.

California’s budgetary process is not a unilateral decision, and I am committed to collaborating with my colleagues in the Assembly and Senate to craft the best possible budget. Our budget should not be balanced on the back of California’s immigrant families. I encourage you to continue sharing your priorities with my office, Senator Arreguín’s office, and Governor Newsom’s office.

It’s always a joy to be in a community with local partners doing the work to turn our values into action. I’m thrilled that I recently joined the Native American Health Center for their first Indigenous Red Market of the year. These spaces are vital to sustain and celebrate the Native cultural experiences of our neighbors. It is crucial to honor the vibrant Indigenous communities that call the East Bay home as we aim to be better stewards of ourselves, our communities, and our environment.

I also had the pleasure of joining Oakland Promise to celebrate their Class of 2025 graduates and champions. Setting our students up for successful and enriching lives has remained a top priority of mine since entering the legislature, and it is always fulfilling to come home to the meaningful work being done by Oakland Promise.

Last week, I was privileged to lead the Assembly in Adjourning in Memory of Derbing Jose Alvarado Gonzalez. Derbing was taken from us far too young when he was killed on March 17, 2025, on his way to soccer practice. Derbing was a member of the youth soccer program, Oakland Genesis, and a student at Cristo Rey Del La Salle East Bay High School, and I’m honored to have had the opportunity to connect with his loved ones.

Derbing had a deep bond with his friends and family and a clear desire to pursue a career advancing justice and safety in our community. I am committed to holding on to his legacy and fighting for a California that would make Derbing proud. Gun violence is a stain on the character of our state, and we must continue making progress to protect our children.

Last Wednesday, May 14, the Golden State Valkyries officially raised their flag at Oakland City Hall to celebrate the Town ahead of their home opener, marking the San Francisco Bay Area's first-ever WNBA Team. With a newly designed training facility in the heart of Downtown Oakland, the Valkyries are building on Oakland's rich legacy of basketball and women’s athletics, standing on the shoulders of giants like Anna Johnson - Oakland’s first professional women’s basketballer - and modern success from Oakland and Alameda’s rich high school basketball scene.

While the federal administration talks, California is delivering results. I’m proud to support the Governor’s proposal to address our shared concerns about the skyrocketing costs of drugs. I introduced AB 910 this year because we know runaway middlemen are driving up prices and burdening California families. I’m excited to see the Governor supporting common-sense policies that will rein in PBM practices, promote affordability, and increase transparency and accountability. I look forward to continuing to work with the Governor and my colleagues on the Assembly and Senate Budget Committees to address these pressing issues.
