In the middle of a harmful government shutdown, Donald Trump is threatening the Bay Area with his authoritarian theatrics. It is against our values to have our communities used as a staging ground to inflict fear, terror, and state-sponsored violence across the Bay. California has seen this President's playbook already. Terrorizing working-class communities, creating chaos in our streets, and targeting individuals based on their race is no way to enforce immigration, create public safety, or run a country.

Power to the People: Redistricting, Oakland Proud, and More Updates!

Last week, I voted to give you the power. Texas is moving forward with new redistricting maps, and other states, such as Florida and Indiana, are facing pressure to commit to their own redistricting plans. That’s why I supported legislation last week that will allow voters the chance to decide if California should enact a new congressional map.

If you’ve been keeping up with our newsletter, you know we’ve been leading efforts to protect Californians’ healthcare, deliver legal support for our immigrant neighbors, ensure everyone has access to nutritious food, and so much more. We can’t stop now. Lives are at stake.

Justice in July: Fighting for the East Bay, Healthy Babies, and Affordable Healthcare

Our community has a long history of taking bold actions and leading the charge to catalyze the change this country needs. With the constant stream of attacks on our values of democracy, equity, and basic decency, it’s clear that this is not a time for our community to back down but rather to show up. I’ve loved seeing how our community consistently stands up for one another: neighbors taking action to beautify our streets, small businesses investing in our people, and tireless advocates always fighting for clean air, water, and soil in our neighborhoods. If you’re interested in showing up for the town, consider getting involved with National Night Out on August 5, an annual outdoor event dedicated to bringing neighbors together.

Joy in June: Standing Up For and Celebrating Our Community

June is a time of deep community building and cultural celebration. Last week, on the Assembly floor, we recognized and celebrated Juneteenth, marking 160 years since the final enforcement of the emancipation proclamation was issued in Texas, freeing the final American chattel slaves. June also marks Pride Month for our LGBTQ+ communities and their allies with celebrations across AD-18 and the country as we remind this federal administration that our communities are not going back and that love is love.
